1890s Vendor Fair

We still have spaces for vendors. If you were scheduled for events that were cancelled becauses of the recent flooding, check us out! Fill out a vendor registration form and email to Gale Hall. We'd love to have you join us. Mansfield is just an hour north of Williamsport, two hours west of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and two hours north of Harrisburg.

Among the new features at this year's Fabulous 1890s Weekend is a Vendor Fair in the Mansfield Fire Hall. Lia sophia, MARK, Mary Kay I AM Miche, Mooshine and many more vendors will be on hand. Sebastian Rivera will be on hand to provide music.

"We're really happy with the way things are shaping up," said cochair Dennis Miller. We have a ton of things going on in Smythe Park, including food and continuous entertainment. To the north of us is the Mansfield Library Book Sale. South of us is the Vendor Fair and to east on VanNormal Field, we have the Mountaineers playing Army. It's going to be an action-packed weekend."

Fabulous 1890s Museum Tent

Joyce M. Tice

Mansfield High School will graduate its centennial class in 2012. In the 2010 Fabulous 1890s Parade, we are asking graduates of MHS to march with other class members, family or friends to commemorate the coming milestone. You can show up at the last minute or notify Joyce M. Tice ahead of time at mhsjmt@aol.com. It’s a short and fairly level walk from the start to end, so turn out and show support. March for MHS. You can wear period costume or not.

In the museum tent we will present the Gallery of MHS Grads from the first class of 1913 to the present class of 2010 – all 6500 of them. It’s beautiful and its fun. We have many three generation and some four generation families among the graduates and at least one five generation family.

We will also display a photographic history of each of the three buildings that were razed this year:
-the restaurant that was the oldest building on Main Street and which has been replaced by a new borough hall.
- the Opera House built in 1887 that partially remained as a garage, firehouse and borough hall and which will be replaced by a beautiful new theater.
- the Junior High School which opened in 1927 and which later became Allen Hall on the MU campus.

Chester Bailey, who founded the museum tent, will present buildings of the 1950s and many other Mansfield memorabilia. We have other displays that will entertain and surprise you. We hope to see you there.

We've booked nearly all the entertainment. The latest booking is William Schlegell who will demonstrate his amazing chainsaw wook carving skills at 1:30 p.m. in Smythe Park. You can see him in action also on this YouTube video, but it's best to see him in action live.

The 19th annual Fabulous 1890s Weekend is set for September 23-24 on Smythe Park in Mansfield. The Weekend celebrates the fact that the world’s first night football game was played by Mansfield University on September 28, 1892.

The festivities will begin on Friday, September 23 with crafts, entertainment, hot air balloons and a soccer game. Saturday kicks off with the 1890s Parade at 11 a.m. followed by a day full of music, games, crafts, the popular museum tent and living history demonstrations.

New acts We're in the process of screening and booking acts. We'll have information as we confirm performers.

The Weekend builds to a climax with a soccer game, and the re-enactment of the world’s first night football game and fireworks with music by the MU “Spirit & Pride of Pennsylvania” Marching Band.

“The MU Family Day also takes place Saturday,” said Dennis Miller, co-director. “It’s the perfect time for parents and alumni to come back to visit the campus and the town.”

He added that the MU sprint football team will play Army, Saturday the 25th at 1 p.m. on the VanNormal field.

"There's a lot to do for all age groups the whole weekend," Miller said.

Much of the success of the 1890s Weekend is the close working relationship between the town and university, Miller added. “Literally dozens of community and university organizations come together to make the Weekend the unique event that it is,” he said.

The Weekend has been featured in such national media outlets as USA Weekend, MTV, Fox News, USA Today and others.

The Fabulous 1890s Weekend is cosponsored by Mansfield University and the Greater Area Mansfield Chamber of Commerce. Admission is a $3 button, which is good for the entire weekend.
